Coromatic secures the data and communication network at giant research facility ESS

Coromatic, the leading provider of critical facilities solutions, today announced that it has been chosen to provide the physical data and communication network at the European Spallation Source (ESS). The facility, that is currently under construction in Lund in Sweden, is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects today.

With a construction budget of 1,8 billion euro, ESS will be a multi-disciplinary research facility based on what will be the world’s most powerful pulsed neutron source. The facility’s unique capabilities will both greatly exceed and complement those of today’s leading neutron sources, enabling new opportunities for researchers across the spectrum of scientific discovery, including materials and life sciences, energy, environmental technology, cultural heritage and fundamental physics.

As a large number of researchers will leverage the facility, a secure and fully redundant data network is a key component. Following a public tender, Coromatic was awarded the contract to implement the physical data and communications network. Coromatic has previous experience in designing and building the complex data network at Max IV laboratories, also in Lund.

The European Spallation Source is a pan-European project with 15 European member and observer nations, with Sweden and Denmark as host nations. When in full use, 2 000 to 3 000 guest researchers from universities, institutes and the business industry will carry out experiments at ESS each year.

– ESS is the second state of the art research facility in Lund that Coromatic is a part of. The facility is located in the same geographic area as our other client Max IV. We are very honoured to have been commissioned to secure the mission critical infrastructure of both these facilities and it highlights our expertise in this field, said Thomas Wunger, Head of Data Center Solutions at Coromatic.
